On behalf of USA Today best-selling author Gretchen Archer, welcome aboard flight Double Up. Fasten your seat belts for non-stop action as stiff competition blows into town and the resulting turbulence threatens to take down the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Super Secret Spy Davis Way Cole, who lives on the 29th floor of the hotel with her CEO husband and newborn twins, takes it hard. If the casino goes belly up, she won't be a stay-at-home mom because she won't have a home. Not to mention, her husband won't have a job.
Davis can't find a way to stop the inevitable end of the Bellissimo life she loves until her ex-mother-in-law shows up, unexpected and definitely uninvited. Davis makes the best of a bad Bea Crawford situation and recruits her for a little corporate espionage work, which would've been great, had Bea not turned out to be the world's worst spy. Ever. Seatbacks and tray tables in their upright positions as we prepare for a bumpy ride with babies, bankruptcies, besties, and shrimp. (Shrimp?) Enjoy your flight.

Double Up Davis Way Crime Caper Series, Book 6 (Audible Audio Edition) Gretchen Archer, Amber Benson, Tantor Audio Books Reviews
Davis Way has doubled down on babies, personal, and casino troubles in her sixth crime caper. Our intrepid Bellissimo casino security specialist/detective has taken maternity leave at the worst time possible, the Bellissimo is failing at the hands of the newest competition in Biloxi casinos. Davis feels it's her fault and with the help of her ex-ex-mother-in-law, Bea (who's having personal troubles of her own), they set out to uncover is rotten (spoiled shrimp) in Denmark. I mean, Biloxi.
The sixth caper is as funny as the first through the fifth, with the complexity in plot you expect from Archer. I believe Double Up's my favorite after the first, Double Whammy. We've seen Davis Way through prison, marriage, loss, pregnancy, and now motherhood. There's a real connection there that you don't get in don't always get in mysteries. Her personal life is always tied up in the caper, not set aside to deal with during her spying downtime. Probably because Davis never gets downtime.
Plus I just love Bea. I'm pretty sure I know her personally. Honestly, I don't think she's actually from Pine Apple, AL, but from my hometown.
I've read this series from book 1 to now. They have all been really good and very interesting. The plots are unbelievable and unlike any I've ever read. I've learned more about casino life than I probably ever need to know but it's all been really interesting. In this one, Davis has had her twins and hasn't left the casino hotel since they've been born, about 8 months now. She tells everyone she doesn't want to leave her babies but it's really because she dropped the ball on the land facing the casino. It was sold without her knowing it to another competitor who is putting her own casino out of business, a few hundred people at a time. They are about to have to close the doors for good. If she had been paying attention, this wouldn't have happened.
No one can get her out in public again and their apartment has been taken over by Smart equipment. For instance, all they have to do is casually mention the word "fire" in a sentence an immediately the "house" calls the fire department. Mention the doctor's name, and they call you one, mention the word coffee and the "house" is brewing you a fresh pot in minutes. There is no longer any privacy there and they can't get the security company to come and unhook the high tech smart stuff.
Then Bea Crawford, Davis's ex-mother-in-law shows up and Davis is finally put into action to keep her out of trouble. She sends Bea over to spy on the new casino and that's when the action really starts. There are all kinds of unexplained things going on. First a dead body literally drops in on them, then millions of dollars in art is stolen. Davis tries to figure out a way to save the casino by building a new game but things start backfiring on her once it's put into use. Quite a bit of humor in the story as in all of them and it's very fast paced. Loved the ending since it was so unexpected and quite humorous too.
I finished Gretchen Archer’s DOUBLE UP (A Davis Way Crime Caper Book 6). It is a perfect mystery. Murder, Mayhem. Corruption. Good guys, bad guys. Death and deception. Wonderfully complicated technology, just to satisfy our inner geek. I read these books slowly because I want them to last. When I completed that final page, I wanted one more chapter so badly I could almost taste it.
It’s not that the book needed another chapter. It was just that I wanted more. I will always want more.
This was a great book. It starts off with a bang and it never slows down, not for a minute. From page one to the last page, it moves, it lives, it breathes.
I find it remarkable that a series which began so simply — a woman taking a job about which she knows nothing — then learning as she goes. Finding love. Managing the hardest parts of life and being everything to not just a boss, but the bosses wife, her husband, her family, and ultimately, her children. She can still do it all.
Against all odds, with all of her personal (and very funny) foibles, she is a champion woman. Smart. Determined, Sensitive. Brave.
Yet, like in the real world, it’s not easy. She could fold up, give up, and move on. But she doesn’t and she won’t and this is that “thing†which makes her a unique character. In a battle of wits, computers, complex corporate greed and corruption. There’s a story — and a story in the story. It is what it seems to be, what it apparently is. But just when you figure “Okay, I’ve got it,†you discover there’s another layer.
The story twists and turns its way to the right conclusion.
The writing is sharp, crisp, perfect. It’s funny and furious. This is a series in which I keep thinking the books can’t get better because they are as good as they could be. But I was wrong. This is better. The characters have grown up. They have depth and what is more, they have purpose. They don’t just keep their jobs. They do whatever they must to make it all work, even when it seems impossible.
The story is intricately complex yet reads like clear water. Nothing stands between you and the story. It is written like glass, without dangling fringes, loose ends, or unattached pieces. Everything goes where it belongs and you end up feeling satisfied — and ready for the next book.
You will never feel the same way about shrimp.
It’s everything I hoped this series could become. DOUBLE UP is a joy to read.
If you haven’t read the rest of the novels, I would highly recommend you read them. The characters make more sense in context of the whole series. One way or another, this is too good to miss. It’s a laugh and a gasp and DOUBLE WOW.
