I'm so glad I made this purchase, I appreciated so many aspects of this book. Amazing thought and effort poured into this! I must admit, in the beginning, I had little expectations-I thought this book would be a plug for her own Swiss Ridge Kennels, but NO! While she does touch on her contributions to this breed- how she's working to bring about the healthiest, family friendly BD she can offer-(I think any responsible breeder would!) The book strongly focuses on the breed itself. She put her very heart into this book and it shows! Very informative about THIS breed. She gives her professional insight on a personal level. Information includes Bernedoodle history, the role of genetics, range of colors, coat texture/types, training, vaccinations, feeding, detailed care!, even a diagram for grooming! Hot topics include her answers to questions that many owners may have, she even shares owner's thoughts and experiences! The most delightful highlight of the book is the beautiful pictures of Bernedoodles throughout. This is a wonderful guide, not only for owners of Bernedoodles, but anyone preparing to welcome a new puppy to their home. There are easy to understand, humorous and enlightening tips on all aspects of puppy care. The training tips are very helpful! It is clear from this book that Sherry is a passionate, knowledgable and caring breeder who really does her homework and breeds dogs that will be loving, fun, gentle and healthy additions to any family.
To address the above negative review (most likely from a pure-bred breeder who hasn't read this book) although there are many beautiful pure-breds out there, sadly these breeds have far too many health problems due to inbreeding (no matter how careful these breeders think they are being with bloodlines) The simple fact is that any mixed-breed pup will be far healthier and have a better chance of living a longer, disease-free life ... especially when bred by a responsible breeder like Sherry Rupke, as she makes sure she breeds only healthy dogs who's bloodlines have been well-proven.
But back to the book... I am not quite finished it, as I am slowly and carefully taking all the helpful information in, but it will be my go-to guide whenever I have a question in the future. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a Bernedoodle or for puppy owners wanting some extra insight into dog behavior and care! Thanks for writing this Sherry and Sandy!
My husband and I have read this twice so far, and am sure we will refer back to it many a time, as we will be receiving our first large dog, one of Sherry's standard Bernedoodles later this month. Having always owned toy dogs, and not being familiar with Bernese MD, nor poodles, in relation to breed characteristics, temperament or care.....It has proved of utmost value in preparing for arrival, learning how Swiss Ridge Kennels has prepared the pups prior to adoption and what we will need to have on hand, and do, upon receiving our treasure. The book hit, on the mark, all of the many questions we have, without having to call and ask about having a large dog in the family, and the transition of melding into our existing human and small canine family. Though a bible for explaining the Bernedoodle breed, the book would have prepared me for adopting most any breed & how to successfully prepare for, and raise, our new family member without the trial and error of guessing through "puppydom". A well written, straight and to the point training manual for the soon to be parents! Kudos.
This is an outstanding book for any dog owner who is seriously interested in developing a well-trained dog from infancy to adulthood. The author makes no bones about the effort and attention required. I have read a number of dog training books. This author caught my attention from the beginning by discussing
techniques for getting to know your dog and for helping the dog to get to know you. if you follow her guidance, you should end up with a great dog. I recommend this very excellent book.
I absolutely loved this book! I do happen to have one of Swissridge Kennels wonderful mini bernedoodles but that is not the sole reason why I couldn't put it down. It is a great read for any prospective dog owner, current dog owner and a MUST READ for bernedoodle owners everywhere. I have given this book to all my family members to read so they can learn more about our bernedoodle. It serves as a wonderful training guide and overall `what to expect when you are expecting' any puppy. Sherry goes into detail about the personality (pros and cons) of the bernedoodle breed but much of the information can be applied to a variety of dog breeds. There is information on training, stages of development, and answers to general puppy FAQ's. I have even given this book to a friend expecting a toy poodle at Christmas. If you have any type of doodle, you need the grooming guide that is in this book! I loved reading about how Sherry Rupke became the very talented and caring breeder that she is today. She is one of a kind. You can see how her hard work has paid off in testimonials from Swissridge bernedoodle owners and in their gorgeous photos in this book (I do wish there were even more photos). Sandy Rideout has an incredible and comical writing style that makes this book a joy to read. I recommend this book to any dog owner, or prospective dog owner looking for lots of useful information on bernedoodles specifically, but also on puppies in general.
